会議の未来を創れ:初の日本生体医工学会オンライン大会

Japan Society for Medical and Biological Engineering, which has a history of 58 years and has 2,700 members, held its first-ever online conference in May 2020. Ken Takahashi, as a member of the executive committee, helped bring this JSMBE annual meeting online by establishing operation procedures and carrying out public relations activities via twitter and facebook. The 59th Annual Conference of Japanese Society for Medical and Biological Engineering (JSMBE) was originally planned as an on-site meeting as “usual”. But the widespread coronavirus epidemic is now changing the definition of being “usual”. At the pre-coronavirus academic conferences, people from different places, sometimes gathered across borders, to discuss research and the future…

Fighting COVID-19 epidemic with Zoom video conference

Ken hosted a Zoom video conference for research report, which was originally scheduled as a face-to-face meeting, on February 27 and 28, 2020. Online meeting is an effective option to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. A research group of “Living in Space” is a section of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Area supported by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. The research group holds its conference biannually. More than 60 researchers in the fields of space biology and medicine attended the conference and reported their findings and achievements. In Japan, work styles and business productivity are more concerned than ever, and video meeting is…

Outstanding Research Award at ICBMS 2019

Ken Takahashi received the Outstanding Research Award at 2019 International Conference on Biology and Medical Science (ICBMS 2019) held in Okinawa, Japan during Feb 28 – Mar 03 2019. The title of the lecture was “Mechanobiology and its application to medical problem solving”. ### Takahashi Lab at Okayama University uses principles of physiology, cellular and molecular biology, and biophysics. The purpose of the lab is to unveil the mechanisms of diseases through collaborations with scientists, epidemiologists, and corporate alliances. The alliance includes Harvard University, Boston University, Tokyo University of Science, and PD Aerospace, Ltd.

Lecture attended: Twins in Space

Ken Takahashi attended a lecture “Twins in Space” by Dr. Brinda K. Rana, an associated professor at UCSD, about how space alters the human body, at Knafel Center of Harvard University on February 4, 2019. The topic is closely related to his space medicine research. While several things were revealed in this famous twins study, what happens to our bodies in space is not yet understood very well. Further study is needed to make the future space travel safe.

ESC Congress 2017, Barcelona

Ken Takahashi gave an oral presentation titled “Simultaneous mapping of multiple proteins in heart using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry” at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2017 on August 26, 2017 in Barcelona, Spain. He enjoyed the “rapid fire abstract” session, in which a presenter was given only 5 minutes, the beautiful city of Barcelona, and delicious cuisines. The abstract is published in European Heart Journal, Volume 38, Issue suppl_1, 1 August 2017, ehx501.45, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehx501.45 This work was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), number: 16K01356.
